Campus masterplan and design principles for Stanford's new Doerr School of Sustainability.

Gehl

Our 4-person team at Gehl presented over 60 design principles to guide Studio Gang and the Campus Architect in the design of the School. I primarily contributed principles that addressed the relationship between indoors and outdoors, prioritized a sense of connection with nature, and limited new GSF. I was also in charge of creating massing, land use, and circulation diagrams and maps used in our final planning documents. Key contributions to the masterplan include:

  • Centering the “Sustainability Promenade,” a forested trail corridor that connects to but breaks with Stanford’s axial layout.

  • Conducting a study on belonging across demographic groups that invited Stanford students and staff to photograph spaces on campus that make them feel either a sense of belonging or exclusion.

  • Exploring a wide number of siting possibilities that could meet important design priorities and regulations, while documenting their trade-offs.
